It is a key element preserving the Mediterranean ecosystems and for CO2 presence in the sea and in the atmosphere. At the moment, the posidonia prairies are disappearing throughout the whole Mediterranean Sea. Still, some of the oldest and best preserved prairies of Posidonia oceanica (one of them is at the moment the oldest and biggest being known in the planet, one unique plant 8km long and 100.000 years old) are located around Formentera. The importance and vulnerability of this plant to the impacts of mankind has meant its protection by both European and Spanish laws: the Habitat Directive of the EU establishes it as a priority habitat; the Posidonia meadows from Ibiza (Eivissa) and Formentera where declared, in 1999, World Heritage by the UNESCO.
Why a "Posidonia" Festival?Because we are aware of the importance of defending the Posidonia oceanica as a key element to maintaining the equilibrium of the mediterranean coastal and sea ecosystems, CO2 presence into the sea/atmosphere and relative climate change.Because the plant contributes enormously to the spectacular beauty of the sea in Formentera . Because we believe in the union of Culture, Education, and Environment Preservation as a means of making a transition towards a sustainable planet. Because of all this, the Posidonia plant stands for the spirit and aims of the Festival. Why Formentera?Because Formentera is an ecologic paradise with an extraordinary environmental richness, both at in the sea and inland. EcoFestival Posidonia Festival organization, together with the Consell of Formentera, is developing some actions to reduce the Festival's impact on the environment , globally and locally on the island of Formentera, as CO2 compensation, recycling, biodegradable plastics usage. Moreover the Festival trake care also of the social, cultural and economic impact on the island.
